What is love?

In John 13:34-35, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give you: that you love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

There are a few extraordinarily powerful proclamations that God makes in the above scripture. He uses the word “new.” In this particular content, “new” is not used as replacement to any of the commandments but a fulfillment of them. First, it means that all commandments fall underneath the banner of this (new) ideology. Secondly, in this “new” commandment, Jesus’ powerful words exhort us to love one another as He has loved us. Notice that Jesus doesn’t instruct us to love one another as we think they ought to be loved, but He commands that we love one another the way He loved us. God loved us in our brokenness, therefore, we are commissioned to love others in their brokenness. God loved us when we offended Him, therefore, we are commissioned to love those who offended  us…

The last and arguably the most critical point that Jesus powerfully proclaims in John 13:34-35 is that all men will know that we are disciples of Christ if we love one another. Men do not know that we are disciples because we are nice. Men do not know that we are disciples if we are friendly. Men do not know that we are disciples if we go to church, hang crosses on our wall, or if we can quote bible scriptures. What reveals that we are disciplined believers of Jesus Christ is if we have love for one another.

What is love? 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 says, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never ends…

The Amplified translation defines love this way:

“Love endures with patience and serenity, love is kind and thoughtful, and is not jealous or envious; love does not brag and is not proud or arrogant.  It is not rude; it is not self-seeking, it is not provoked [nor overly sensitive and easily angered]; it does not take into account a wrong endured.  It does not rejoice at injustice, but rejoices with the truth [when right and truth prevail].  Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening].  Love never fails [it never fades nor ends]” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

May we, as disciples of Christ, be mindful of how we treat one another in the name of love.

The Private Pursuit

A man who lust for other women, cannot be possibly be interested in you. I warred in my own spirit regarding this very thing. There was a man in my life who at times would privately pursue me, but publically express his lust or attraction for other women, and even be overly kind or affection to certain women while completely ignoring me in public settings among other things. In my spirit, I always knew that the man God had for me would never do that. But, I was always made to feel I was overreacting or over emotional. The Lord revealed that I wasn’t overacting or over emotional regarding these particular instances at all! I was instead watching a man expose, sometimes publically, not only his lack of love and value for me, but also his lack of respectful women overall.

Sisters, the man God has for us will bring peace, clarity and love. Of course, there may be challenges, but those challenges should not bring brokenness, insecurity or regret! The man God has for you is pursuing one woman, and that woman will be you! He doesn’t have time for confusion, lust filled interactions or distractive soul ties. The man Jesus has called you to be joined to understands that there is purpose in every relationship, namely to glorify Jesus! The man God has for you desires a companion, not company! Rest beloved and trust God.

I’m nice because I’m a nice person…

Several years ago, I had the esteemed privilege to set under the teaching of Bishop Noel Jones for a length of time. He taught me many profound lessons. One of many quote’s that is ingrained in my mind is when he said, “I’m not nice to you because you’re paying me to be nice (or, because I want something from you); I’m nice to you because I’m a nice person, because I had an experience with God!!!” Those words perfectly explain the sentiment of my heart time and time again.

It is truly heartbreaking that pain ruins so deep, that many people have been so broken and bruised, so used and abused (refusing to truly believe God) that most oftentimes, few have the capacity to discern the selfless and honest virtue of love or kindness.

Frequently, the expression of doubt, curiosity, suspicion and even shock is exposed when I seek to reciprocate the love, grace or kindness to someone that Jesus has been so merciful to show to me. Some wives think you want their husband, some people think you want their approval, people think you want their position, people think you’re trying to uncover private information, people think you want their endorsement… At times, it can be slightly amusing but, more often then not, it is simply heartbreaking, exposing the deeply rooted trauma that one has yet to conquer.

May the LORD heal the secret brokenness and torment that dwells deeply in the heart, mind and soul of His children. In Jesus name I pray.
